3G is retiring — older devices may stop calling & texting

From 31 March 2026, 3G connectivity will no longer be available on Spark’s network. If your phone/device relies on 3G (or relies on 3G specifically for voice/SMS), you may lose:

Text the free 3G checker

Send a text message with 3G to 550. You’ll receive an automated reply with guidance.

Use an IMEI / device checker (if needed)

If you can’t text from the device (e.g., tablet, smartwatch, tracker) or want extra confirmation, you can check compatibility using an IMEI/device checker from the relevant provider.

Find your IMEI by dialling *#06# (most phones), then use the checker.

If your phone is affected

The best fix is to move to a 4G-capable device that supports 4G calling (VoLTE). Also check any SIM-based devices like alarms, medical devices, vehicle units, and trackers.

Common questions

Only devices that rely on 3G (or rely on 3G for calling/SMS) are at risk. First step: text 3G to 550 from your device.

Not always. Some phones use 4G for data but still rely on 3G for voice/SMS. Use the SMS checker and/or IMEI checker to confirm.

A 3G-dependent device may not be able to place calls after the shutdown — including emergency calls to 111. Please check early and upgrade if needed.

Some non-phone devices still use 3G. If it can’t send an SMS, use the IMEI/device checker option, or contact Scott Mobile and we’ll help you verify compatibility.
